Today is Liberation Day in Kuwait, the 15th anniversary of that country’s liberation from its violent annexation by Saddam Hussein.
I scanned these helpful illustrations by Carl Rose from the 1945 book Stork Bites Man, by Louis Pollock. Of course, not every baby will hit these developmental benchmarks at exactly the same rate, but they serve as a useful yardstick to gauge just how far your baby is lagging behind everyone else’s.

One question I get asked a lot is, “Sean, is there a Web page where my kids can learn all about beer?” You bet there is. It’s the Beer History for Kids Page! It’s filled to the brim with tasty beer facts, like:
A lot of people, especially children, died from drinking bad water in antiquity. But the alcohol in the beer killed the germs, so beer was always safe to drink. (Most children in the United States today don’t drink beer, but in antiquity and the Middle Ages children did drink beer).
Also, beer “has the nutritional value of barley.”
George Washington’s 274th birthday will be on Wednesday, but the government he bequeathed us has decided to observe it today. So, happy birthday, Mr. Washington.
And no, this is most emphatically not “Presidents Day,” because there is no such thing.
