Yesterday, Charles Hill made the unsupportable assertion that with the exception of Route 66, the New Jersey Turnpike was “the most famous road in America.”
You may participate in that debate over on Dustbury.com. But I wanted to show you an amazing federal government resource I found in the course of researching the topic. The Federal Highway Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation, maintains an exhaustive compendium of road song lyrics.
Hundreds of song lyrics, from “Daddy Had a Buick” to “I’ll Fix Your Flat Tire, Merle” to “Pink Cadillac.” Spend some time with these golden oldie road odes, and you can sing with Johnny Cash:
He asked me if I’d seen a road with so much dust and sand
And I said, “Listen, I’ve traveled every road in this here land.”
